Writing Workshops
Hello Friends,
As you’ve probably already read, I am going to be setting up some Writing Workshops in my district and I have been looking for ideas. These are the three most popular ideas at the moment. Please send in your feedback and let me know if the course content sounds interesting and what you would add/remove. As always, you can post your feedback as a comment on this thread.
Creative Non-Fiction Workshop
This workshop will run once a week for five weeks; it’s purpose is to create a cohesive medium length creative non-fiction piece (5-10 pages). We will first review the most common types of creative non-fiction essays including; the personal essay, the memoir, history writing and lyrical prose. From this point, students will choose their favorite type of essay and receive a prompt. The remaining weeks will focus on drafting, revision, peer evaluation and will culminate in a large group workshop and discussion.
Poetry Writing Workshop
This workshop will run once a week for 5 weeks; it’s purpose will be to create a small (5-7) poem polished poetry portfolio. Each week will focus on a different type of poem ranging from the more structured verse (haiku, sonnet, sestina) all the way to free verse. Each form will be explained and demonstrated and students will be expected to leave class with rough drafts and return the next week with polished poems to read out loud in workshop format.
The Short-Short
This workshop will run for one day, it’s purpose is to introduce students to the “short-short” as a writing form and to hopefully create a rough draft of their very own short-short. The class will end in a large group workshop/discussion of the work. Through peer review, students will be able to hone their short-short-writing skills.
Any additional suggestions for courses you’d like to see would be great! Thanks so much for your continued input and support.
