2008: Don’t Let The Door Hit You On Your Way Out!

I can’t say that 2008 has been good to me, though it has had it’s moments. I am,  however, not sad to see it go. As far as my personal life goes, 2008 has been horrid.

(If you’d like to know more about it, I suggest you look me up on Myspace: Scooperdooper.)

There have been a few good things to come out of the year (lower gas prices…. though we had to wait most of the year to get them….)… but again, they weren’t enough for me to send 2008 off with a tearful goodbye.

So…to 2008, I say…. Blow it out your hole and may 2009 bring me something good.

As for the rest of you, I hope your dreams, wishes and desires all come true for you in 2009. May your writing be published and your voices heard!

Publication Update

scooper.jpgHello!

I just wanted to remind everyone to check out next month’s issue of The Writer’s Eye Magazine as yours truely will be featured in the upcoming issue. Hooray!

I would also like to encourage readers to visit the website for The Idiom Magazine! I will also be featured in one of their upcoming issues. I am not sure what the release date on that will be, but I will make sure to keep everyone in the loop.

Hooray for publications.

Aside from that, I don’t have anything new and exciting to tell you. I am planning a small new years celebration with only close friends as I have pretty much outgrown the party circuit. Sad times for me. Though, I am excited for a calm dinner and a nice small drunken gathering.

Ooooooooooohhhh… on another note. I have just recovered one of my favorite books from my archives and I would encourage any budding (or even seasoned) writer to keep a copy on hand. The name of the book is “In The Palm of Your Hand” and it is written by Steven Kowit. It is basically a “how to manual…” though, it is one of the best I have ever read. Check it out.

Holiday Greetings

Hello out there in blog-land! I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting regularly, but I took a little blogging sabbatical for the holidays.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday! I enjoyed my Christmas more than I have in a long time! You know that Christmas is satisfying if it leaves you not wanting. We had two awesome days of family time….two great dinners…some excellent board game time and of course presents. I was soooo excited for everyone to open what I had gotten them this year. Hooray!

Anyway, I am still working on writing submissions and greeting card ideas… hopefully a few more get publication! I’m also still looking for that dream job of mine. Perhaps it will happen sometime soon (fingers crossed). Other than that, I am off of work until January 5th due to the holiday break. School resumes on Monday the 5th and hopefully I’ll be getting some subbing assignments in the near future.

I am also eagerly anticipating the new year! I hope everyone has a great time if I don’t get back to wish you a great new year at the proper time.

Ok, I’ve went on long enough…. Happy holidays! Look forward to a meaningful post soon.

The Art of Subbing.

So, as many of you already know, I am a substitute teacher. Which is something that I both love and hate. It’s an interesting creature.

Things I Love:

I love the flexibility. If I can’t or don’t feel like going in… I can say “No” and not get in trouble for it. It’s great, especially on a Friday morning! (I work LATE LATE LATE on Thursday nights!)

I love helping children learn. I can live with knowing that I’ve helped the next generation of children! Hopefully, they will do the right thing and help this world out… but that is their decision and not mine. I love when I can show a child something new, you feel a great sense of accomplishment in knowing that you helped make something click!

I love the experience. Working with kids of all ages gives you perspective and makes you quite an asset to the teaching world. I work with kids ranging from 3-18 years old on a regular basis and I can deal with them accordingly.

I love meeting new people. I have met some of the most friendly and helpful people while subbing, a few of which will be friends forever.

Things I Hate:

I hate how the job isn’t stable. While flexibility is a plus… the lack of stability is a minus. Sometimes you’ll be able to sub 4-5 days a week, but sometimes you only get 1-2 days a month. It’s difficult to be independent when your income is so varied. That and as a sub you do not receive any sort of benefits (at least not in my neck of the woods)…so, getting sick is not an option.

I hate how rude and disrespectful children have become. I would have never dreamed of mouthing off to a teacher! I have children of all ages say the rudest things to me… I mean I get the satisfaction of sending them to the principal’s office, but seriously, don’t parents teach their children to respect their elders anymore? I understand when the children try to get away with murder or if they chat more than usual… that is what happens when there is a sub… they constantly try to pull the wool over your eyes because you’re new. What they don’t consider is that “new” does not mean “dumb.”

I hate that staff members look at you like you’re stupid or not worth their time. I am every bit as educated, if not more than most school teachers and I have every right to be there. Just because I am not full-time does not mean I am below you!

How do you feel about teaching? Or your career?

I will eventually move on from subbing, but it will be with a heavy heart….and an empty pocketbook. lol.

Publication…. Finally!

shroudedindarkness.jpg

Well kidlets, I am super excited to be able to announce that my poem, “Almost Intimate Escapades” will be published in the January/February issue of The Writer’s Eye Magazine!

This is my first publication in some time. I was so astonished to read the words “We are happy to announce that we’ve accepted your poem…” I almost just deleted the e-mail tossing it out as another failed attempt! Ha ha! I am glad that I didn’t.

Aside from my work with Suite101, this is my first publication since 2004-2005. I suppose a few years isn’t that long to go without publication, but it could be better. I am glad that I’ve found a literary magazine that fits with my “unique” style of writing. Often times I am too crass for publications which makes me a bit sad… why couldn’t Bukowski have started up a publication! I would surely fit there!

If you would like to know a little bit more about the publication or read the current issue, please visit The Writer’s Eye website. The magazine is a unique venue for writers that also happen to be visual artists. Each written publication is accompanied by an original art piece (photo, painting, sculpture) that was done by the same artist. In some cases the piece of art is also the writing (See Home by Kit Croucher).I particularly enjoyed, “The Seasoning of Winter” by Earnest Williamson (the painting is wonderful!) and “Insomnia” by Melissa Kirchner. Though, all of the published works in the current issue are spectacular.

 Give it a shot!

Indie Girl Serenade

I am glad to see such a good response to my last post, however narcissistic it may have been. I realize you don’t always want to see pictures of me, but I think they bring a more personal quality to my blogging.

 That being said…

img_0009.JPG

Here is a picture of me in my natural environment, though the ash tray doesn’t belong to me as I am not a smoker… the computer and mess, however, are mine.

So, I’ve decided that I need to invest in a lap top. I am looking at the acer mini, it is affordable and convenient. I could keep it in my purse if I wanted to and it would be available whenever I needed it.There have been so many occasions where I’ve been hit with a great story idea or a great line to include in a poem, but haven’t had the means necessary to write it down… get it all out. Of course, I carry around a notebook and pen with me everywhere, but it is difficult to get the entire idea out quick enough if I am using paper. (Blah Blah… Stop whining about not having a laptop…back in the day you would have had to make due with an ink well and a quill…)While the pen and paper method has helped some of those ideas see the light of day… on most occasions I don’t have the time or patience to sit there and write it all out by hand…an idea hits you on the way to work…pulling over to write it all out on paper takes way more time than you can afford. A lappy would be a much quicker means to record my ideas.

For example, I was sleeping over at my fiance’s house the other night and I woke up around 3 am with a great story idea.  Rather, I had an incredibly vivid dream and I woke up thinking, “This would be the perfect story for a novel!” But, since dream memories tend to fade fast… I didn’t have the time to get the idea on paper and it was lost. All week I’ve been trying to come up with the details from the dream and I’ve got nothing!

Who knows, it may have been the next great fantasy novel … but not it will never be written. Sigh. So, I’ve decided to save up enough money to get myself a passable lap top. Plus, I think my PC’s days are numbered. She’s a fighter, but I don’t think I’ll be able to salvage her when she finally kicks the bucket. Sigh.

That is all for today. No assignment. Perhaps tomorrow.

This Is How I Feel Today

I hate coming up with an answer to the questions “How are you today?” or “How do you feel?” First off, no one ever answers them honestly and second off, how could you possibly answer the question with a single word or emotion?

Now, I know you probably don’t want to see a bunch of pictures of me.. but, that’s too bad.

So, with no further ado… this is how I am feeling today

.devil.jpg Devilish

It doesn’t have to make any sense at all… there is really no way to tone down your feelings. They are running through your head making you crazy and contradicting one another. So, what’s a girl to do.

How does everyone else feel today? Ha.

What Do You Want To Hear About?

As far as I can tell, people want to hear articles or post written in a friendly manner… in order to connect with the average person… but is that what you really want to hear?

Blogging is an interesting sphere that I haven’t quite nailed yet, my blog is young and as such it is all over the place as I am still trying to find my niche in the blogging world. I started out posting random articles, some scholarly and some personal… but that didn’t really take off. So, I moved on to the writing prompt idea. It was a good attempt, but still fell a bit flat.

I don’t want to be sitting here marketing products or telling people how to optimize their web writing… I want to write something that people will enjoy… whether it’s a personal journal, random thoughts about life, funny little quips, writing prompts, yada yada yada…

So, what do you as readers want to read? Should I start an online novel? Should I complain about life in general? What…What….What… would you like to hear? More pictures, less pictures? I would like some feedback from my small, but loyal audience.

Perhaps gaining some greater perspective on the blogosphere will help my blog in being successful.

Thanks for the insight…or not…either way, I will be back later with something new.

Yaargh! Ye scurvey dogs!

Aargh! Well ye have stopped looking at my pages as of late, so I’ve decided to return to my pirate persona. It seems to generate an ample amount of hearties!

So for today, I’d like to share a personal recollection from my captain’s log. I encourage all of ye to do so as well… lest ye walk the plank! I’ll do it too, make ye walk out into the frigid depths of the sea! Tis not a good time of year to be sleeping with the fishes!

Yaarrgh!

Anyway, I just wanted to share a bit of me own writing with you today. Enjoy. Let me know what ye think or post some of your own writing!

I’ve even deicided to stay in the pirate persona for my submission!

The captain is by no conventional definitions a captain, nor is he a spatula. This rules out possibilities of the captain making his abode in a ship at sea or the utensil drawer of a kitchen. His name is Chris, he is the self-proclaimed Captain Spatula of the Beloit Roof pirates, and he has no home.

When I met Chris he was a stout man in his early 20’s working in dirty arcade downtown Lake Geneva, WI. The decrepit games were almost as old as the slimy old man that ran the place. Business was always on hiatus and hundreds of new types of fungi were forming in the dark moist corners of the establishment. It’s no wonder Chris became Captain Spatula, pirate extraordinaire, and decided to wander the country aimlessly, looting and plundering his way through life.

I suppose it must have been hard for him to sleep at first, with nothing familiar surrounding him save what he carried on his back in an old Jansport book bag with frayed ends and broken zippers, but I’m sure all of the rum and scotch swilling eased his tension. Clan McGregor is his favorite brand of brew.

If home is where your heart is, then the Captain had no heart. If home is where you lay your head at night, then the Captain had the largest heart of anyone I had ever known. Regardless, he is a formidable character. He carries few things with him from his old life. His book bag containing naught much else than a few ragged t-shirts, some torn up shorts, assorted toiletries, a notebook and a glass pipe. These are the only comforts he requires to make him feel at home wherever he winds up.

More than frequently you can find him curled up on a patch of tile or carpet in some rundown flophouse with twenty other lost souls. The walls covered in grime and crumbling, asking for the sweet sleep of a condemnation notice. Poor lighting fixtures full of dead bugs and bad plumbing are a few of the benefits to the upper-class hovels. Running water is a precious commodity that is savored when available, which isn’t often. Pirates and Bohemians tend to be a stinky bunch. The floors filthy, unkempt, covered in mashed food remnants and footprints amidst the sleeping bodies lazily sprawled across the floor covered in dirty blankets which are stained with refuse and love. His head snuggled on his book bag in a restless sleep, dreaming his bohemian dreams with all of the other nameless faces living their lives according to bohemian ideals.

He is a restless spirit, traveling the country as he sees fit. The captain doesn’t stay in one place more than a few weeks because he fears stability and would rather answer the call of the wind. So, he hitchhikes in his tattered Grateful Dead t-shirt and ratty camo shorts. Sticks his thumb out and gets into whichever vehicle stops, each time taking the risk of being killed, each time setting out on a new adventure. But then again, that’s what Pirates do. The good Captain takes no prisoners and travels alone, making friends along the way and every so often, he will come back to the beginning. Every so often, he will tell his tales. Every so often, he is Chris.

Schooling…

So, what I want to know is how people manage going back to college. I really can’t afford to go back to school and adding to the pile of loans doesn’t seem like a good plan… at least to me? Though, if I go back to school for one full semester I can come away with a whole new degree… which may or may not help me in the real world.

I currently hold a BA in English Writing with a minor in Philosophy and a certification in Women’s Studies and an MFA in Creative Writing with an Emphasis in Creative Non-Fiction.  If I go back to school for one semester and take 5 courses I can also have a BA in English Literature with a minor in Women’s Studies… and if I take two more graduate seminars I can also have an emphasis in Poetry… but, would it really help my case?

The job market is terrible right now! I’ve applied for over 150 jobs since last May and I still don’t have a full-time job. I only got 2 interviews out of the whole mess as well and I was qualified or over qualified for each position that I applied for. So…… I don’t really know where to go from here. I know I could have easily gotten any of those jobs had the market not been so terrible… but I’m going up against 30 year vets with PHD’s applying for entry to mid level positions. How sad for all of us! Obviously, if those types of people are applying for jobs, the 3 years of experience I have won’t really help me out in the job venue.

Sigh. Sorry, I’m venting… but maybe someone out there can give me some advice. My dream job would be a tenure track position teaching creative writing at a small state or liberal arts school… which is an attainable goal, but not in today’s market.

So, what do you guys have for me? Any ideas on where to go from here?

I realize I’m supposed to be helping my readers out, but maybe we can pool ideas and someone else will get some assistance in the process.
