Wish Me Luck…Or Else No Writing Lesson for Today!
Well, I just applied for a Professional Writing and Publishing Professor position with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. It is my dream to work at UWW… and I think I have the unique qualifications they are looking for. There was even a note about web based writing… and what do you know? I am a blogger extreme!
That being said, I noticed we’ve had our first writing submission! Thank you Penny! Your poem was beautiful and you’ve earned the rank of pirate in my crew! Great job and please, keep submitting! (Tell your friends too!)
That being said, I’ve been thinking about technical writing. I didn’t have much experience with it while I was going through school. Sure, there was always the option to take a technical writing course in both my undergrad and grad programs… but who wants to take something boring like that when you could be taking Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology or The American Gothic or Memoir Writing? Seriously.
After having completed both degrees withough taking the dreadful “technical writing” course… I realized that it was a POOR choice on my part! (So, if any of you have the option, take advantage of it, you’ll thank me in the long run!) When you’re fresh out of college, generally you’re looking for a job… and every job that I apply for requires both a cover letter/letter of application and a copy of my resume/cv…. When I started applying for jobs I was writing ridiculous things as I really has no idea where to start… but 150 some odd job applications later, I think I’ve crafted my application materials quite well.
I had someone in the human resources department at Jockey Inc. check out my resume and a sample cover letter…. and I guess (at least on paper) I look like a premium addition to any company, which is phenomenal! I realize that my experiences do pale in comparison to some of my competition, but I like to think that my individuality and odd qualifications are gleaming enough to at least get me past the initial run. As time progressed, I started recieving more letters and requests for additional material and even a few interviews…. so, I must be doing something right!
Though, I tend to fall apart in the interview…. guess it’s going to take me a few more before I get that step right… but I am making excellent progress, at least in my opinion.
So, for today’s writing prompt I would like everyone to write up a sample CV or Resume for a writing position…. I will post a sample of my resume as a guide.
(Oh and before I end this post… ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make sure that you write a brand new resume/cv and cover letter for each position you apply for… A form resume/cover letter just won’t cut it. You need to take the job as and tailor your application materials to the specifications listed or you’re dead in the water! For sho’!
