Writing Prompt-O-Rama

Published by ravendarkblade at 9:11 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Well, I seem to have drummed up some interest in the whole writing prompt idea. I’m glad! Hopefully that means we’ll have some more participants this time around.

I think this idea has helped me re-ignite that writing passion that I’ve been so serioiusly lacking in recent months. If writing is what you want to do with your life, you have to kick yourself in the behind and stay on task…. So, I hope all of you budding and seasoned writers are doing just that. I’ve decided to just post my stories right in the body of the blog, so that they will be visible as a sample for everyone to work from or perhaps just gain ideas from.

If anyone has any suggestions for writing prompt ideas, please let me know as I am more than willing to incorporate the input of my readers! That being said, today’s prompt will be a fun one… and I have a more complicated one in the works for tomorrow… keep watching and don ‘t feel like you need to post your work EVERY time (even though I would love to read it!).

Today’s prompt is an exercise in personification. If you don’t know what personification is, I’ll give you the quick run down. It is when you give an inanimate object human characteristics.  So, think of an object that means something to you…. it can be as tiny as a thimble or as large as a house… and then write the story of your adventures with this object. The story can take on any form, so don’t feel like you need to imitate my story and above all HAVE FUN!

Here is my submission (remember to leave your submissons as comments on this blog):

Bradley

Written By Jessica Gleason

His name was Bradley, we met in the summer of 2002 and I loved him. Bradley was a connoisseur of fine collectables and his prized possession was a plastic pineapple. The pineapple was acquired during a late-night excursion to the local Wal-mart. Echo, my blonde cohort, and I decided that Bradley was lacking and the obvious solution to this was a plastic pineapple and some Velcro. We used the Velcro to fix the pineapple to Bradley’s sleek grey dashboard. It looked much better.

Though Bradley’s dash was certainly far from plain, already being adorned with a “Princess” beanie baby and a “Pigpen” stuffed animal in the right corner of his dash, obviously also affixed with Velcro. There was also a little groove in the center of Brad’s dash right next to the cracked windshield; another one of Bradley’s distinct personality flaws, and this groove was home to a tiny pewter dragon named Lucy. So many colorful characters lived inside of Bradley.

Bradley’s life philosophy was “Live Aloha” and it was emblazoned on the passenger side air bag panel of his front dash. The “Live Aloha” sticker was a declaration of Brad’s dedication to the Hawaiian spirit. It’s home was right below an ironically placed “Dashboard Confessional” bumper sticker and it was surrounded by various random CD stickers—Lucky Boys Confusion, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, The Foo Fighters, Cradle of Filth, The Killers, etc.

Bradley’s dashboard wasn’t the only decorated facet of his grey cloth interior. From the rearview mirror hung multiple palm tree air fresheners—another shout out to his peeps in Hawaii—some Mardi-Gras beads that were collected during various nights out to the local karaoke bar, and a pair of leopard print dice with the word “princess” embroidered on them. The most unique deco was the finger cuffs, which were attached at one end to the dice’s string and at the other to the leg of an albino C3PO action figure. I guess C3PO is into bondage.

Bradley’s rear bumper was a wondrous work of art, the likes of which have never been seen before. It was completely covered in bumper stickers that were collected all over the USA on Brad’s many voyages, his sleek V6 engine has racked up over 100,000 miles on these intimate bumper sticker collecting trysts, but it was nothing his Ford Escape body couldn’t handle. The collection included, but was not limited to these stickers: “NOFX,” “I do what my Rice Crispies Tell Me To Do,” “Xena For President,” and “Ron Jon’s Surf Shop.”

While Echo and I were often showering Bradley with gifts, we weren’t always so nice. Once we snuck off to Wal-Mart and returned with some black car window paint and while Bradley was asleep, we painted all over his beautiful yellow exterior. Our names were written on the hood with arrows pointing to our seats. We also wrote “The Short Bus” on the front and back of him. On the sides, we painted the words “The Moon Rulz #1” as a tribute to the “mooninites.” When Bradley woke up, he was royally pissed but he forged on until his recent death on November 29, 2006.
